Jack chooses to protect the Island

A common recurring theme on LOST is choice. Characters are given choices that determine their futures.

Life and Death

  • Jack must choose between doing whatever he can to save Edward Mars or conserving resources and euthanizing Mars as he requests. ("Pilot, Part 2")
    • Outcome: Sawyer attempts to put Mars out of his misery by shooting him in the chest, but only succeeds in puncturing his lung. Jack then has to finish the job.
  • Jack must choose between saving Adam Rutherford and Sarah. ("Man of Science, Man of Faith")
    • Outcome: Although Sarah's injuries appeared to be less severe, Jack chose to focus on her rather than Mr. Rutherford.

Morality

  • Jack must choose to either tell the review board of his father's drunkenness resulting in Beth's death, or to remain silent and make his father happy. ("All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues")
    • Outcome: Jack tells the truth, resulting in his father having his medical license removed, causing him to drink more, ultimately leading to his death.

Lifestyle

  • Charlie must choose between either Claire or his heroin addiction. ("The 23rd Psalm")
    • Outcome: Charlie eventually destroys all the heroin by throwing it into the sea. ("Three Minutes")
  • Richard chooses immortality to avoid damnation. ("Ab Aeterno")
    • Outcome: Richard becomes Jacob's messenger for the next 140 years. ("Ab Aeterno")
  • Jack chooses to replace Jacob as the protector of the island. ("What They Died For")
  • The Losties push the button in season 2 by choice.

Ultimatums

  • The Man in Black tells the Temple dwellers that they must either choose to follow him or die. ("Sundown")
    • Outcome: The Man in Black kills everyone who doesn't follow him.
  • The Man in Black gives Sawyer three choices while they are looking at the names of Jacob's candidates in the Cliffside cave. He tells Sawyer that he can A) Become the new Jacob. B) Do nothing. or C) Leave the island.
