Involvement with Main CharactersEdit

Theory 1: Widmore was instrumental in getting the passengers of Flight 815 to the Island Edit

Evidence:

Widmore and Desmond
  • His employee Abaddon put the walkabout idea in Locke's head
Abbaddon
Dt7Added by Dt7

Counter-evidence

  • Widmore only "helped" Locke get to the Island -- and no one else -- because Locke was the only person Widmore knew would actually live on the Island at one point in his life, since he saw him there in 1954.
  • Widmore had no idea 815 was going to crash.
    • If he knew it was going to crash he would know where the Island is, so why not just send a team to extract Linus at that point rather than waiting for a plane to crash there?
      • Just because he knew the plane was going to crash, does not mean he knew where the Island was. He may have needed the crash to help him find the Island.
  • If Widmore could somehow see the future (Which would be required to predict the thousands of variables required to get certain people on the plane) why send the freighter? The two actions of A) sending a military and science team on a specific mission to extract one man using brute force and direct transportation and B) minutely altering people's lives in order to conspire events that they would survive a plane crash onto the island could NOT be the actions of the same person.
  • The various coincidences involving Widmore prior to the crash are no more or less likely than the many other coincidences involving characters on the show.
  • Widmore has no relation with Thomas whatsoever, the painting is not proof, it is reused props. The painting in his office is at least 7-8 years before the painting is in Thomas' apartment. Desmond had the meeting in Widmore's office in 1996 and Claire realizing she was pregnant in early 2004, the time line in which above screen shots were taken.
  • Jacob's Nemesis said that Jacob was the reason they were all at the Island.
  • Charles Widmore was looking for a way to get back to the Island ever since he left. One of his options would have been to track down John Locke, who had claimed, in 1954, to be a future leader of the Others. If Locke was telling the truth, then Widmore could presume that Locke would end up on the island at some point in the future. If he did believe that Locke was destined to be leader as Locke had said (which Widmore may well have, because it seems that Richard believed it just because he kept bumping into Locke at different times) then maybe Widmore hoped that Locke would accomplish whatever it was Widmore wanted to accomplish anyway. Widmore may have found out that 815 crashes on the Island through the Others' encounters with the survivors that were moving through time, especially if Eloise talked about Farraday's notebook with him. So perhaps by manipulating Locke into going on the Walkabout, he hoped that he would end up on the flight back to LA that he knew would crash.

Theory 2: Widmore was instrumental in getting Desmond to crash on the Island Edit

Evidence:

2x23 DesmondWidmore.jpg
  • Charles intentionally antagonized Desmond so he would be driven down the path of going to the Island.
  • Widmore continued to intervene in Desmond's life, long after Penny had moved on, giving him the money that he used to finance his training and ultimately sail to the Island, leading to the crash of Flight 815 on the island.
    • In Live Together, Die Alone, Desmond tells Libby that he did not take Widmore's money. It is arguable, however, that offering Desmond money was more of a motivation to enter the sailing race than actually having the means to do so; it insulted Desmond's sense of honor that Widmore thought he could be paid to abandon Penny.
  • When Desmond got sent back in time, it was to the very day he met Charles Widmore. Everything that happens on the island hinged on that day, that meeting.
  • Ms. Hawking may have also worked for Widmore, we saw her picture with the Monk who originally recruited Desmond away from marriage and to the monastery - where on the day he was fired, Widmore had ordered wine from the abbey, Penny went to pick it up, and Penny and Desmond became a couple.
  • We know from Season 5 that Eloise Hawking and Charles Widmore had a relationship on the island and are the parents of Daniel Faraday. We have never seen evidence that Hawking was Widmore's "employee".
    • If Ms. Hawking is working for Widmore, then he too must know the way things are "supposed" to be; it would take a tremendous amount of foresight to know that sending Penny to pick up wine would lead to Desmond turning the fail-safe key, plus the entire thing hinges on Penny and Desmond falling in love, which is not something Widmore would have even wanted to happen.
    • The producers admitted that Ms. Hawking is a temporal policeman that is there to make sure that Desmond makes it to the Island. Brother Campbell is also a temporal policeman in that he makes sure that Desmond meets Penelope at the monastery.
  • Penny is presumably using Widmore (her father's) money to search for Desmond who is on the island.
  • Widmore was holding a race around the world in hopes of someone finding the island for him.
  • We know Widmore sponsored Daniel Farraday and his research. Daniel told Widmore about his encounter with Desmond (in Desmond's mind traveling from The Constant). This prompts Widmore into creating the race itself and hiring someone (Libby) to give Desmond the boat which may or may not have had a gps tracking device in it. Widmore also manipulates Desmond into actually wanting to go on the sailboat race in order to prove himself to Widmore as not a coward. Widmore learns from Daniel that Desmond will spend 3 years in the hatch and cause the crash of 815 and that he will turn the failsafe key which allows Widmore to find the island in the first place.

Counter-evidence

  • None of Widmore's activities seem to have foresight or omnipotent knowledge. For the most part he has very little idea where the island is.
  • If he knew Desmond would crash on the Island, why not travel to the Island directly?
  • Why would he want Desmond to crash there? He still could not find the island even once Desmond crashed.
  • The race and the hot air balloon sponsorship are likely sneakier means of trying to find the Island. That is why the race began in LA, to ensure the highest number of boats would still be in the race during the Pacific stretch. Widmore hoped that a boat with a radio would inform the race committee about an Island that was not on their charts.

The Reasons for Widmore's involvement with particular passengers of Flight 815 before the crash Edit

Widmore.jpg
PyramidheadAdded by Pyramidhead
  • Somehow, the Others seemed to have an interest in Locke, as well as an ability to find him, way before he ever came in contact with the island. Widmore, someone familiar with the island and DHARMA, may have access to similar knowledge.
    • They are interested in him because of their encounters with him during the time skips.
  • Widmore wanted people on Flight 815 because he knew it would crash, and he put particular people on that flight because they had the ability to overthrow Ben - Widmore's enemy, and might help him get closer to reclaiming the island.
  • As we see from above, there is reason to suspect that he is watching Claire, Locke, Desmond, and perhaps Hurley via Libby in Santa Rosa.

What side Widmore is onEdit

Widmore is on the Good SideEdit

  • Sayid told Jack to find Desmond because he's important since MiB want him dead. Widmore brought Desmond to the Island for an important task which still needed to be done.
  • Widmore's people put them in the cage surrounded by those electromagnetic things so that FLocke cant get to them.
  • Widmore planted the C4. Widmore told the Losties he was doing "it" (locking them up, even to threatening Kate) for "their sakes" too. He was keeping them away from Locke, and the scene at the plane. Widmore's plan A was to get Flocke on the plane, even if he only "had a look around" and with everyone else safe, attempt to destroy Flocke.

Widmore is on the Bad SideEdit

  • MiB promised Ben the Island after he left. MiB has promised Widmore the same deal and Widmore has accepted.
  • Widmore planted the bomb on the plane for MiB. He left only two men guarding it for show. He didn't surround it with the electro fence.
  • MiB never intended to try board the plane. The bomb couldn't have killed the candidates anyway.
  • MiB redirected everyone to the sub where he knew Widmore's men would ensure all the candidates (including Jack) would be forced on the sub and then double cross him.
  • Widmore doesn't want to leave the Island. He wants to control it once MiB is gone.

Widmore is on neither sideEdit

  • Ben and the MIB have both stated that Widmore only cares about "exploiting" the Island and has no interest in anything else.
  • Ben was offered control of the Island by MiB after he left. So was Widmore, who took the deal.
  • Widmore wants to exploit the pockets of electromagnetism.
    • Which is why he needs Desmond, and why Zoe questioned Jin about the pockets of energy
    • Exploiting this electromagnetic power is his main goal that fits into a higher purpose that the Losties are not yet aware of. This makes it seem as if he isn't "on the good side," and since they are ignorant to this higher purpose he must "babysit" them by doing things like putting them in cages so that they don't get in the way. But either way Widmore is mainly playing his own game.
  • He wants to exploit the Island's 'secrets'.
  • Jacob recruited Widmore to help candidates, but he instead chose to play on his own side.

Widmore is still working for the island Edit

Evidence:

Abbadon
PyramidheadAdded by Pyramidhead
  • He is still sending people to the Island who have a role on there like Desmond and "special" people like Locke (through Abaddon) and perhaps others.
    • He pays for Daniel's research and sends him to the Island in order for Daniel to devise a plan to stop the "Incident". Although the incident occurs, the use of the bomb prevents complete destruction of the Island.
    • It's notable that aside from the mercenaries (including Naomi), every member of the Kahana expedition Widmore hired had a connection to the Island -- and this can't be a coincidence. Lapidus was the original 815 pilot; Charlotte left the island as a child, as did Miles; and Faraday had to return to complete the Jughead plan.
  • In the "present", Ben also works "for" the Island, though he doesn't live there.
Ben Linus off the Island
SteffAdded by Steff
    • Ben claiming to work for the Island doesn't necessarily mean it that this is the case. He could be believing he's acting in the island's interests but working of his own accord with no other instruction after his banishment, or he may simply be saying he's acting in the island's interests but is ultimately serving his own. This is equally true for Widmore. Both were banished by Jacob for breaking the rules and both worked of their own accord to return to the island without being called.
  • By putting the fake Flight 815 on the ocean floor, he is helping to conceal the Island.
  • He tells Ben that he is having, presumably Island related, nightmares in "The Shape of Things to Come". This implies that he, like Locke and Ben has dreams. In the case of the latter two, these dreams or premonitions often told them what the island wanted them to do next.
  • Widmore is only the "bad guy" according to Ben. He wants to find and reclaim the island because he believes Ben is the bad guy. He thinks the island wants him to reclaim it.
  • Widmore's people are setting up a sonar fence around the dock on Hydra Island, obviously expecting a confrontation with the Man in Black. If the Others' main purpose had been to keep the Man in Black prisoner, Widmore seems to be eager to carry on.
    • Jacob told Hurley "Someone is coming to the Island. I need you to help them find it." This someone turned out to be Widmore. So Jacob wants Widmore on the Island.
      • However, Charles being banished as leader of the Others is supposed to mean that he is not allowed back to the Island, Jacob does not seem one to break his own rules. Also, Jacob instructed Hurley to turn the compass in the Lighthouse to 108 degrees, which was labeled with the name Wallace (crossed out). Since Jack's demonstration shows that the compass links the candiate's number to a connection to the person's origin, Jacob was asking Hurley to to bring someone named Wallace to the Island, not Widmore (though Jacob turned out to be giving these instructions to accomplish something else, he still says that the person he asked for will find his own way to the Island).
  • Charles Widmore is the true leader of the Others. Ben tricked The Others into exiling him from the Island, and probably even tricked Widmore into thinking that he deserved to be. The why is a bit of a stretch: We know that the fountain of resurrection in the Temple changes people. They said it would always make Ben one of them. The extent to which it changed Ben, we do not know because we don't see him again until 1989 or so. But it does seem like the fountain, or at least the experience of returning from the dead, made Sayid evil. Perhaps it had a similiar affect on Ben- instead of a being a good, rule following Other, Ben was ambitious and manipulated Richard into thinking that he was special. Then, for no other reason than the fact that he was power hungry, Ben set Widmore up. It wasn't until after Widmore had left the Island that he realized that The Others were following someone who was not in communication with Jacob and did not know what he was doing. Ben was not following the MIB explicitly, but was being manipulated by him. Ben's foolishness and lack of qualifications for the job of leader would inevitably lead the Others to A: Reject him and hurt his ego, and B. Accept the leadership of Locke; both of which which were essential to the MIB's plan of gaining access to and murdering Jacob. Although Widmore certainly did not realize the exact details of this plan, he probably realized that Ben's leadership would give the MIB an opening to escape from the island. Ever since then, he tried to return. And Ben, never realizing the dire situation he had put the island in due to his blind ambition, blocked Widmore every step of the way, thinking that Widmore merely wanted to show him up. It was not until the island began to turn on him that Ben realized he may never have been the real leader. At first he was angry- this is why he killed Jacob. But later he realized it was not Jacob's fault. It was Ben's own ambition that misguided him. This is why, as of now, he has rejoined the good side and is fighting to prevent the MIB from leaving. He is once again, sort of, serving under Widmore. Perhaps Ben's redemption leaves hope for Sayid.

Counter evidence

  • The "Secondary Protocol" that Widmore gave the freighter crew was to torch the entire Island once they had captured Ben. It seems unlikely that this would be in the interest of the Island.
    • However, it could be argued that he ordered this knowing the Island would not allow those it actually needed to die. This way he could count on Ben's loyal followers being killed while Locke and those who were truly Widmore and Locke's people would survive.
    • 'Torching the Island would, in his eyes cause no damage to the Island itself, only to the people on it - who are of little to no consequence. Widmore was still working in the Island's favour here.

Widmore has returned to the island to either confront, distract or to make a deal with the Man in BlackEdit

6x08 SawyerWidmore.png
GregausAdded by Gregaus

Over the years in exile Charles Widmore has been collecting all kinds of intelligence about the past of the Island and during his encounter with Sawyer reveals extensive knowledge of the Man in Black:

  • He is aware that the real John Locke is dead and seems aware or not surprised that the Man in Black has taken his form.
  • He is aware that the Man in Black can shapeshift into the smoke monster and has his people erect sonar fence pylons to protect his beachhead at Hydra Island.
  • He seems to be aware that the Man in Black is eager to escape the Island (yet hasn't destroyed the Ajira plane which is the Man in Black's proclaimed escape vehicle).
  • He seems to have somehow been able to monitor events on the Island and arrives at the proper time.
  • He abducted Desmond as he is the only one resistant to large quantities of electromagnetic energy to peform a yet unknown task (Zoe is interrogating Jin about the electromagnetic pockets on the main Island).

When confronted by Sawyer with the dead Ajira passengers, Widmore rejects responsibility, but neither does he blame their deaths on the Man in Black. Sawyer merely assumes that Widmore wants to kill the Man in Black, but Widmore gives him neither confirmation or denial (notice the amused smile on Widmore's face after Sawyer mentioned "you can kill him". Seems to be more along the lines "how little you know!"). The part of the deal they seal with a handshake is merely for Sawyer to deliver Widmore the Man in Black.

Widmore has seized control over the Man in Black's escape vehicle (blocked by sonic pylons) either to trade it in for more substantial and important information only the Man in Black can provide or as a means of distraction or provocation (while the Man in Black is preoccupied how to gain control of the [Ajira]] plane on Hydra Island, Desmond can perform his yet unknown mission on the main island without interference from the Man in Black).

This would also explain Widmore's lack of interest upon arriving at the main Island, though important people like Benjamin Linus, Richard Alpert, Ajira's pilot Frank Lapidus and [Sun]] are at the beach (Widmore's got bigger fish to fry).

Charles Widmore had repeatedly pretended that he was still looking for the Island (as a means of deception) while he knew all along about its location: Either (given his surveillance obsession) through his connection with Eloise Hawking who was in charge of the Lamp Post and/or his connection with / infiltration of the DHARMA Initiative / Hanso Foundation still performing the periodic resupply drop on the Island (also keeping Desmond busy on the island).

As it seems now, Charles Widmore has been working together with Eloise Hawking all along (yet, she is probably not interested in Widmore's conflict with Linus), but has an additional agenda. Had his plan been limited to merely deprive the MiB of his escape vehicle (the Ajira plane), Widmore's people could have easily blown it up at any time, get back to the sub and leave the islands for good.

If the release of the Island's electromagnetic energy has "unchained" the MiB, Desmond may be the key figure in Widmore's plan to reactivate the electromagnetic energy to "re-chain" MiB (currently distracted by Widmore), so that Desmond and those Oceanic survivors which will not stay behind, remain enabled to use the Ajira plane for a safe return to civilization.

All the actions taken by Widmore since his arrival on Hydra Island have provoked the Man in Black and provided a "casus belli" (i.e. reason for war) from the Man in Black's point of view:

  • setting up sonic fences protecting Widmore's submarine and the Ajira plane
  • not returning Jin to the Man in Black and further denying knowledge about Jin's current location
  • (on the other hand) setting an ultimatum for the Man in Black to return Desmond and firing a warning shot near the Man in Black's camp
  • firing at the Man in Black and his group upon arriving at a beach vis-a-vis Hydra Island, causing casualities among this group

Relationship to other characters Edit

  • Employer of Matthew Abaddon, who has had contact pre Flight 815 with Locke (encouraging him to go to Australia), and post flight, representing himself as a lawyer from Oceanic Airlines, questions Hurley about whether anyone else "survived."
  • Lied to Gault when he told him Ben put the fake wreckage of 815 on the ocean floor. It was him really.

BirthEdit

CharlesWidmore1977.jpg
ObiDanKenobi5Added by ObiDanKenobi5
  • Charles was not born on the Island. The Island has a rule that the leader of the Others, the one who speaks to Jacob, must come from off the Island. This is why Charles, then Ben, and then John Locke are leaders.
    • There is no long lost tribe of natives on the island. No one is indigenous to the island. Some people have simply been there longer than others. Some ancient Egyptians probably crashed there and stayed just like everyone else. Richard isn't native. He has simply been on the Island longer than anyone else. He has a covenant with the island. If he follows the leader he can keep his immortality. Richard isn't that special. The Island gave him immortality but that's all he got. Charles/Ben/Locke etc can speak to Jacob unlike Richard. They're chosen... Richard isn't.
      • As of the Season 5 finale, we know that Richard Alpert can communicate with Jacob. We have seen Ben with Jacob, but the "Jacob" Ben preached to the others was one he made up and never actually communicated with.
      • If you think of it that way, then no one is indigenous to the Island because based on migration patterns and evolution, it would be impossible to have humans there unless they arrived some how through travel (whether time, sea, air, etc.)
      • As of Season 6, we know that other than Jacob and MiB, Ricardo is the only living person on the Island from the date of the Black Rock wreck in 1867.

All the people that for the Others must have come since that date. As they all seem to age normally, they are representative of their time. We are unaware if anyone has been born on the Island besides Ethan Rom, and we know pregnant women cannot presently give birth on the island if the child is conceived there.

Widmore is Prepared Edit

Submarine
Jabrwocky7Added by Jabrwocky7

Note these facts:

  • Widmore has a sub that has arrived at the Hydra Island a short period after Ajira 316 crashed.
    • Subs do not travel as fast as jet planes. While we don't know where the sub comes from, it is likely it has been travelling as quick as possible to the Island.
  • The sub is crewed with a select team (eg Zoe being a geophysicist)
  • He has Desmond on board
  • He has a sonic pylon system to defend against the MiB.

All these items indicate that Widmore has been preparing for some time, but that he also got things together very short time to be already at the Island.

  • We last saw Widmore at the airport, talking with Sun before the Ajira flight that day.
  • We last saw Desmond in hospital, after being shot and fighting with Ben at the LA marina, the day before the Ajira flight. Widmore was outside that hospital that night.
    • Widmore must have dashed to LA from the UK, as that day he was taunted by Ben on the phone. Ben saying how he was returning to the Island, and going to kill Penny first.

He has been keeping track of Desmond, over the years and more specifically now. The question is why?;

  • Widmore knows that Desmond is special in relation to the Island and/or to time and events in the past. In some way, Widmore knows Desmond can be utilized to defeat or stop the MiB.

How Widmore made his fortuneEdit

Widmore Industries.jpg
KiwipatAdded by Kiwipat

Since we've seen that Widmore's company manufactures medical supplies, the Island has curative properties, and Ben has accused Widmore of wanting to exploit the Island, it stands to reason that Widmore made his fortune exploiting some of the medical secrets of the Island.

  • I think it has been heavily implied that Widmore owns Oceanic. That's why Sun was detained until Widmore arrived. Maybe he bought it after the company's image took a hit after 815 crashed or maybe he's always owned it.
    • Sun was detained as she was boarding the Ajira 316 flight, not Oceanic.
      • ...no she wasn't.

Charles WidmoreEdit

and the Hanso FoundationEdit

Hanso Logo 2.png
SkksAdded by Skks
  • Charles secretly owns the Hanso Foundation and is using all his power to find this island, which is why they had Matthew Abaddon and Naomi to recruit the people from the freighter to find the island.
    • The Hanso Foundation is a subsidiary of the Widmore Corporation, or is at least largely funded by them.

And his reason for finding the IslandEdit

Island23.jpg
JabadibahAdded by Jabadibah
  • Charles Widmore wants to find the Island
    • to take advantage of the unique healing properties
      • for exploitation for personal gain
      • to cure himself or someone he cares about who is dying of some kind of inoperable cancer, or paralyzed like Locke.
    • to continue the work DHARMA started or start some new sort of experimentation on the Island's strange properties.
  • Charles Widmore ordered Charlotte and Daniel to disable to the Tempest system as one of their first steps on arriving on the Island.

And the reason for him finding the Island's "exit" pointEdit

  • Widmore learned of Charlotte's find of the DHARMA polar bear in Tunisia
  • the appearance of a mysterious man (Benjamin Linus) in 2005 pinpointed the exact location
  • before John Locke arrived at the same location in 2007, Widmore had set up a surveillance system

and the KahanaEdit

The Kahana
Robert K SAdded by Robert K S
  • Widmore is in the same situation as Faraday and Desmond, trapped between time periods.
  • Charles Widmore is a powerful man - he knows about the boat and he told the crew of the boat not to answer phones from Penelope (he doesn't want her to find Desmond).
  • Abaddon works for Widmore and hired the crew.
    • The members of the expedition have been told different stories and have different objectives.
    • Naomi stated they were on a search and rescue mission and that Oceanic 815 had been found on the ocean floor. If the objective of the search mission isn't the plane, the Black Rock is the only thing on the island worth the expense of a search.
    • Widmore convinces some that an objective is finding Desmond on behalf of his daughter Penny; or he instructs Naomi to lie to the people she finds on the island and tells Minkowski not to answer the phone.
    • The scientists have objectives related to the island's properties and may, with Widmore, be connected to the Dharma Initiative.

The Island in the "Alternate" Timeline Edit

Charles Widmore bought an Island and sunk it. This is a pattern of behavior for him.

  • He's starting therapy for it next week.

Widmore is "Wallace"Edit

  • Jacob said "Wallace" will find a way to get to the Island. Widmore is seen coming back to the Island in Dr. Linus. Widmore was a possible candidate but since being exiled from the Island, he was crossed off. His plan is probably something to help gain control of the Island from the Man in Black.
    • Jacob has never uttered the name Wallace.
  • Widmore's middle name is Wallace, making his full name Charles Wallace Widmore. Charles Wallace is a recurring character in Madeline L'Engle's books, specifically A Swiftly Tilting Planet

Widmore's returnEdit

  • Sun is working with Charles, and has some sort of tracking device that helped Widmore locate the Island.
  • Widmore learned of Jacob's death and the MIB's escape plan via his "nightmares" and convinced Eloise to help him find the Island via the Lamp Post.

Widmore only wants to save his son Daniel by rewriting historyEdit

5x14 WidmoreHawking.png
Sam McPhersonAdded by Sam McPherson
  • From the moment Eloise Hawking accidentally killed their son Daniel, she and Charles Widmore have worked ruthlessly to carry out Daniel's plan to replace the current timeline with an alternative in which Daniel and others live happily. They use Daniel's notes to predict the future which brings the adult Daniel to the 1970's, then play their roles, no matter how erratic, violent, or ruthless those roles seem. They manipulate others, including Desmond, Penny, Ben, and Daniel himself, confident that if they succeed, their present history will be wiped away, replaced with a better one for Daniel.
  • Ensuring the occurrence of the timeline leading to the detonation of the nuclear warhead during the Incident requires Widmore to behave in a calculatedly heartless, even seemingly sadistic, fashion towards the remaining Others (sending Keamy to massacre them) and toward Desmond (whom he needs on the island, to ensure the Oceanic crash). In the sideways timeline, Widmore is free of the imperative to save his son, and shows his natural affection for Desmond.
  • Widmore and Eloise have decided to replace the present timeline, and have come to treat its inhabitants as non-people, as they will be replaced by alternate versions. It doesn't matter who they kill, or what dreams they end (e.g., Daniel's desire to be a musician); in the new timeline, these people can live again, and realize their dreams.
  • Widmore and Hawking do not doubt the necessity of their plan to ultimately save Daniel, but the strain of carrying out a plan which first made their son miserable, and then sent him to die in the past, was too much for their marriage. Knowing that nothing in their current timeline would survive also makes maintaining their marriage---or anything else not necessary to Daniel's plan to change history---expendable.
  • Widmore is MiB's enemy because if history is rewritten, MiB will be irrevocably trapped on the sunken Island.
