Back to the Island is a LOST rewatch podcast started in February of 2014. It is hosted by punk musicians Jeff Rosenstock and Chris Farren, usually along with a rotating third guest host. Each episode of the podcast centers around a single episode of LOST, and episodes are watched in no particular order, which only adds to the general confusion of the hosts and guest hosts.
History
The concept for the show came about in early 2014 while Chris was in New York working with Jeff on the debut release of their band, Antarctigo Vespucci. The origin was explained by Chris and Jeff in response to a listener question in episode 18 “Dave (2x18)." Chris answered,
“The genesis of it was, when we were making the Antarctigo record we started talking about how it would be cool to have a podcast together, and that it should be some sort of like, TV related podcast. Originally we were going to binge watch a show—a whole series… We were thinking Game of Thrones or Scandal… and there was like, a lot of things that we couldn’t figure out, like that Jeff hadn’t seen that I had seen, and vice versa. And we wanted to have something that neither of us had seen and then somehow that turned into something that both of us had seen.”
Jeff continued the thought,
“Then one of us said ‘back to the island,’ and then we were like, ‘That’d be a funny name for a podcast about LOST,’… That’s what I remember happening.”[1]
On episode 69 "The Hunting Party (2x11)" they offered a slightly different and expanded explanation,
"I think we were smoking weed... and we were talking about how it would be fun to do a podcast anyway. And then we just thought that 'Back to the Island' would be a good name for a LOST podcast. And then we were like, 'OK, let's do a LOST podcast.' And then, since we were stoned we decided to watch it all out of order. And then we thought of 'LOST My Report Card' which is segment where we rate the episode... I think we thought the name was a good bit, and watching it out of order was a good bit, and then we thought 'LOST My Report Card' where we rate it on a scale of 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 was a good bit. And so we decided to watch 121 hours of a television show we've already watched, and then talk about it for 121 hours."[2]
Segments
In addition to the main discussion of the episode, Back to the Island features several regular segments, each with their own accompanying theme music or sound effects.
Chris and Jeff Talk About LOST for Four Minutes Straight
This segment was created by Jeff in episode 50. Occasionally, when one of them feels like they've gone too long without discussing the episode of LOST they just watched either Jeff or Chris (usually Jeff) will start this segment in which they can only talk about LOST for at least four minutes.
There is also a version of the theme song that is slightly sped up, due to a misunderstanding the first time Jeff suggested the segment.
Lostapedia
Chris and Jeff look through the Lostpedia.com entry for interesting facts and mistakes from the episode. This segment usually ends with one or both of them annoyed with the lack of interesting trivia. They call it Lostapedia even though the website is Lostpedia.
The theme is from a 1988 Food Emporium commercial with the word “Lostapedia, Lostapedia” layered over the original lyrics “Food Emporium, Food Emporium.” Otherwise the theme is unchanged from the original.[3] There have been several variations/parodies including "Mousapedia" and "Farrenpedia."
In episode 44 Jeff stated his desire to discontinue Lostapedia as a segment, but seemed to forget by the next episode.
Lost My Report Card
Near the end of each episode Jeff, Chris and their guest(s) will rank the episode of LOST they watched on a scale of 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 or 42 with 4 being the lowest score and 42 being the highest. Chris is the most frequent violator of this ranking system, rating “Expose (3x14)” a 23.5, “Collision (2x08)" an 18 and ”Something Nice Back Home (4x10)" a 43. Jeff has only strayed from the numbers once, rating "Orientation (2x03)" a 32.
There are special themes for when all three hosts give the same rating (“3-fr-3’s Day”) or, if there are four hosts, when all four hosts give the same rating (“4-fr-4’s Day”). There has also been a “2-fr-2’s Day” from an episode without a guest host, but Jeff called it horrendous and expressed a desire that it never be played again.[4] So far it's been used two more times, along with several other versions of a 2-fr-2's Day theme. Jeff and Chris have each contributed their own version of a “1-fr-1’s Day” theme for their solo episodes.[5][6]
Back to the Mailbag
Occasionally they will check the show’s e-mail inbox and read and respond to fan emails. The theme song for Back to the Mailbag is the main podcast theme with additional vocals layered over top to change the words to “Back to the Mailbag at gmail.com.”
Apologies
Some episodes end with the hosts apologizing (or refusing to apologize) for things they said during the episode that they feel were offensive, insensitive or embarrassing. Sometimes the apologies are to the listeners in general, but often they are directed at cast or crew members from LOST. Occasionally one host will apologize to another and there is a special “Apology Accepted” theme song if the apology is accepted.
Bonus Clips
Bonus clips come at the very end of an episode and usually include a short and often out of context audio clip recorded at the same time as the episode, but not included in the main body of the episode. Bonus clips are not included in every episode.

Theme Songs
One of the hallmarks of Back to the Island is the abundance of music found throughout the episodes. Jeff and Chris are musicians so they both have the ability to easily create short themes based around topics of conversation during the episode. New themes can be called out at any time and are occasionally done by one host (usually Chris) as a joke on the other host (usually Jeff) knowing that they will now have to write and record that theme for the episode, although Jeff has gotten very skilled at deflecting these themes back at Chris.

Forgotten Themes
These are themes that were specifically called out in the episode, but were never created.
- Sawyer Theories (ep 6)
- Interesting Kisses (ep 12)
"The Incident"
"The Incident" was a harrowing and uncertain time for fans and hosts alike. It spanned a total of 6 episodes from episode 27 to episode 32.
Timeline
At the end of episode 26 "Some Like it Hoth (5x13)" Chris teases a very special apology for Tim Daniels. Tim guest hosts the following episode, "The Whole Truth (2x16)," and during the apologies section Chris reveals that when he was in New York a month earlier he saw Tim on the street after exiting the subway but didn't say hi or catch Tim's attention. The episode ends with Jeff and Tim discussing Chris' duplicitous nature and calling for him to reflect on his behavior. Tim decides not to accept Chris' apology immediately and asks instead for some time to think about it.
Episode 28 "Solitary (1x09)," opens with the series' only "Previously on..." segment recounting Chris' apology from the week before. Chris then leaves Jeff a voice mail saying it's time to record the podcast and that he hasn't been able to reach him or Tim since recording the last episode. Chris proceeds to record episode 28 on his own, featuring more somber sounding acoustic versions of the theme songs. This is also the shortest episode of the series.
Episode 29 "Because You Left (5x01)" has Chris hosting with Casey Lee. For the majority of the episode Chris repeatedly redirects the conversation to Jeff and even writes him a birthday song. Chris rates this episode a 4 because, "LOST sucks," and he's, "sick of doing this podcast."[7]
Episode 30 "Happily Ever After (6x11)" begins with a phone conversation between Chris and Jeff where Jeff explains that he didn't have his phone because he was in Japan and Korea and that he's worried about Chris after listening to the last two episodes. Chris replies that he thought Japan and Korea were boroughs of New York. Jeff then further explains that Tim was also out of the country. The rest of the episode follows normally with a much more happy and energetic Chris.
Episode 31 "? (2x21)" has Jeff hosting alone while Chris is out of town. This episode is almost the complete opposite of Chris' solo episode with Jeff speaking very fast and energetically, as a stream of consciousness, for almost the entire episode.
Episode 32 "Whatever Happened, Happened (5x11)" wraps up "the Incident" story-line with Jeff and Chris hosting together with Tim Daniels as the special guest again. During the episode Tim is noticeably still upset, making almost constant, subtle, passive-aggressive digs at Chris. Chris doesn't seem to notice and recounts how he made it up to Tim by flying to New York and taking Tim to dinner at the Times Square Red Lobster, boasting that he picked up the $65 check and only made Tim pay the tip even though he only had a salad.
"The Incident" ends with everything going back to normal.
Shannonpalooza
Shannonpalooza is a series of episodes starting with the second episode of season 2 (episode 44) and ending with the fifth episode of season 2 (episode 47). According to the hosts, Shannonpalooza is a summer concert series centered around Shannon/Maggie Grace. Shannonpalooza was teased in episode 43 of the podcast with a commercial. The Shannonpalooza episodes feature a different opening theme ("Time to Pretend" by MGMT(except for episode 46)) and "Shannon Trivia" segments hosted by Chris (except for episode 47).
It's possible that the idea of Shannonpalooza came from an early episode of the podcast when they were complaining about Shannon and Jeff suggested that they should watch all of Shannon's episodes back to back and get them out of the way.
It's also possible that they just thought it would be funny.
LOCKEtoberfest
LOCKEtoberfest is a block of episodes centering around Locke during October 2015, beginning with episode 54 and ending with episode 57. Traditionally Jeff and Chris have showed open disdain of the character of John Locke, but during the beginning of season 2 and "Shannonpalooza" their attitudes shifted somewhat, even so far as to cause Chris to exclaim "Locke rocks!" During episode 46 Chris announced LOCKEtoberfest without consulting Jeff, and seemingly just because he liked the pun on Oktoberfest/Rocktoberfest.
So far the only unique segment has been "Shannon Trivia: Locke Addiction" which, like Shannon Trivia from Shannonpalooza, is announced by a harmonica tone. Shannon Trivia: Locke Addiction questions center around Terry O'Quinn.
Jeff also stated that there's "music everywhere" at LOCKEtoberfest and "you can't escape it," but the music only consisted of a harmonica jam between Jeff and Chris during episode 54.

Season 2
In episode 42 "The Other Woman CHRISTMAS SPECIAL (4x06)" Jeff and Chris stated that they were taking a break, but they would probably be back in February.[8] Later in the episodeJeff jokingly said "We did 42 of these, and in four to two weeks we're gonna come back and do 42 more."[9] During his AMA, Jeff answered that the plan was for the show to return in May 2015.[10] The reason for the delay was that he "wanted to come back with some episodes that were me Chris and Tim live in the same room instead of over Google Hangouts."[11] This intention was repeated on Twitter[12].
On June 19th, Chris stated via Twitter that they recorded two new episodes, but "things have been hectic with mixing [the new Antarctigo Vespucci record] and [Jeff's] wedding so we haven't been able to edit or do more yet"[13].
On July 22, 2015 the official Back to the Island twitter account tweeted a link to a stream of the new Antarctigo Vespucci album "Leavin' La Vida Loca" with the comment "Pt. 1 of cool news today:..."[14] followed by a winky face[15] teasing the release of the Season 2 premier later that night.

-This, combined with the previous episode, makes the first true back-to-back 3-fr-3's Day. Previously, episodes 13 & 14 were 3-fr-3's Days, but they forgot to play the theme in episode 14. And episodes 24 & 25 were 3-fr-3's Days, but episode 25 had a total of 5 hosts and only 3 of them had matching scores (all the scores weren't unanimous) but they played the theme anyway. -This episode combined with the previous episode has the widest possible range of scores (all 42's last episode, all 4's this episode). -This might be considered to be the lowest ranking episode, even though episode 44 also earned three 4's, because initially in episode 44 Chris said he wanted to give it an 8, but then changed his mind. Episode 42 also earned all 4's, but because there was no guest host, it only earned two 4's, not three. | |
050 | September 9th, 2015 | The Man Behind the Curtain (3x20) |
|
|
-This is the 50th episode of Back to the Island!
-This is the second episode to feature a credited guest who doesn't actually guest host the show or provide a "LOST My Report Card" rating. The first was episode 42. -Despite Chirs' doubts, this is the first time they've called someone during the show. | |
051 | September 16th, 2015 | The Moth (1x07) |
|
|
-As Chris mentions in the episode, this is the first time both hosts have unknowingly created unique themes for the same reference. The only other similar instance was in episode 42 where Chris sang the Christmas Joke song in English and then Jeff sang it in Spanish, however they were still performing the same song other than the language difference. | |
052 | September 23rd, 2015 | I Do (3x06) |
|
|
-This is a special *wedding themed* episode and was released a few days before Chris' wedding.
-This is the first time a theme from season 2 has been repeated (Lockeabout). -This marks the first time there have been two perfectly scored episodes in a row. | |
053 | September 30th, 2015 | Lighthouse (6x05) |
|
|
-Jeff recorded this episode from California shortly before leaving to play a series of shows in Japan with the Bruce Lee Band.
-Despite the "Chris Farren Public Decree" Chris actually has given a 42 to an episode in which Sawyer didn't appear--Ab Aeterno - episode 16. -This is the last episode before the planned LOCKEtoberfest series starts. | |
054 | October 7th, 2015 | Deus Ex Machina (1x19) |
|
|
-This is the first LOCKEtoberfest episode.
-This is seemingly the first time they have unintentionally called out a theme song title that was previously used, and written a new theme for it (Do You Think That's a Thing?/Do You Think That That's a Thing?) | |
055 | October 14th, 2015 | Orientation (2x03) |
|
|
-This is the second LOCKEtoberfest episode.
-This is the first time the Apology Accepted theme has been heard in season 2. -This is the first time Lostapedia has used a new theme. Previous variations were used for other bits (Farrenpedia, Mouseapedia), but not for an actual Lostapedia section. | |
056 | October 21st, 2015 | The Brig (3x19) |
|
|
-This is the third LOCKEtoberfest episode. | |
057 | October 28th, 2015 | The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham (5x07) |
|
|
-This is the final episode of LOCKEtoberfest
-Jeff recorded this episode while on a beach in Virginia -This is the shortest episode to feature both Jeff and Chris, and the second shortest episode overall (Chris' first solo episode--number 28--clocks in at 14:32). | |
058 | November 4th, 2015 | House of the Rising Sun (1x06) |
|
|
-This is the first completely "on location" episode of the podcast not including live episodes.
-This is the first episode to be intentionally recorded in several sections (not due to technical difficulties). -Chris claims that he gives every episode from season 1 of LOST a 42. That is obviously not true. | |
059 | November 13th, 2015 | The Cost of Living (3x05) |
|
|
-Jeff recorded this from a venue in Tucson, AZ on November 12th, 2015.-This is the halfway point in Jeff & Chris' quest to rewatch every episode of LOST. | |
060 | November 26th, 2015 | Eggtown (4x04) |
|
|
-This episode premiered on Thanksgiving (U.S.), one day late
-This is the first episode back after No Show Show #1 -This is the first time the show has had three perfectly rated episodes in a row. | |
061 | December 17th, 2015 | The Variable (5x14) |
|
|
-This was the first episode to be intentionally released on a Thursday, the new release day.
-Initially this episode was missing the Main, Lostapedia and Ending theme music, but was reuploaded later that day with the themes included. -Chris gave the episode a 4, but Jeff said it's an 8 because Chris watched the episode twice and he agreed. | |
062 | Decemeber 24th, 2015 | Homecoming (1x15) |
|
|
-This episode was released on December 24th, even though Soundcloud and iTunes list the date as December 21st, because that's the day the episode was uploaded, before it was made public.
-This episode was released one year to the day after episode 42, the season one finale. -This is their Christmas episode, but they don't mention Christmas at any point. -During this episode Jeff and Chris announce they'll be watching The Little Prince (5x04) -The last Mailbag segment was episode 28 (August 13th, 2014), which was Chris' solo episode. The last Mailbag episode with both Chris and Jeff was episode 25 (September 3rd, 2014). Either way Jeff is right when he says it's been over a year since they last checked the Mailbag. | |
063 | December 31st, 2015 | Everybody Loves Hugo (6x12) |
|
|
-This is the last episode of 2015 and was recorded on New Year's Eve of 2015.
-In the previous episode they said this episode would be The Little Prince (5x04). | |
064 | January 7th, 2016 | Lockdown (2x17) |
|
|
-Chris says that Tim hasn't been on the show for a year. His last appearance was actually episode 50, 4 months earlier, though he only appeared in a phone call and didn't rate the episode. His last appearance as a regular guest host was episode 44, about 5 and a half months earlier.
-This marks Tim's 20th appearance on the podcast. -Chris ends up naming 24 bald actors if you count the questionable submissions like Frank Sinatra, Lex Luthor and the Six Flags Guy. | |
065 | January 21st, 2016 | Exodus Pt. 2 (1x24) |
|
|
-This episode came after a one week break, during which Jeff promised a super-sized episode[17]. This episode comes in at around 38 minutes, which is about average.
-The reason for the confusion on the episode counts is because there were 3 longer-than-usual episodes of LOST, and Netflix splits two of them into two episodes. So the actual produced episode count is 118, but Netflix has 120 listed. -The version of the LOST series finale on Netflix used to be a shorter, edited version and it's possible it used to appear as two episodes as well, accounting for Google listing 121 episodes. -This is the first episode to not be rated by any host. *In episode 67 Jeff and Chris rated "The Exodus" as a whole, so those ratings have been retroactively applied even though parts 2 & 3 weren't rated in their episodes. | |
066 | January 28th, 2016 | Exodus Pt. 3 (1x25) |
|
|
-This is listed as Exodus Pt. 3 (1x25) though in the original airing this episode was the second half of double episode, Exodus Pt. 2 (1x24). Because of that a rating this episode was expected to cover this week, as well as the previous week's content, and that may have been the original intention, but the episode ended without a rating.
-At one point Jeff tries to throw to Lost My Report Card, but they get sidetracked and never return to rate the episodes. -The episode description on Soundcloud and iTunes incorrectly states that this is the first time they've watched two episodes in order, but in the episode Chris says he thinks they've done it one other time which is correct. Weeks 1 & 2 of Shannonpalooza (episodes 44 & 45) followed the production order of the show. *In episode 67 Jeff and Chris rated "The Exodus" as a whole, so those ratings have been retroactively applied even though parts 2 & 3 weren't rated in their episodes. | |
067 | February 11th, 2016 | Exodus Pt. 1 (1x23) |
|
|
-This episode completes "The Exodus" season 1 finale.
-This episode was more about LOST than any episode has been in a long time, and most of what they discussed actually happened. -During the "Lost My Report Card" segment Jeff and Chris rated the Exodus storyline as a whole, retroactively giving ratings to episodes 65 and 66. | |
068 | February 25th, 2016 | Everybody Hates Hugo (2x04) |
|
|
-This episode is a frustrating phone call between Jeff & Chris, featuring a forgotten theme ("Technical Difficulties") and segment ("Bonus Clip").
-Though there is no official Apologies section, the episode ends with Jeff and Chris apologizing to each other while the outro music plays. | |
069 | March 17th, 2016 | The Hunting Party (2x11) |
|
|
-On Soundcloud and iTunes the episode guest is listed as KellyDawn Helmrich, but her real name is Kelly-Dawn Kelso.
-This was recorded while Jeff & Chris were on tour in Australia and is the first truly international episode of Back to the Island. -This is the 69th episode of Back to the Island, but they didn't make any jokes about it. |
Season 3
The break between season 2 and 3 was unplanned and is the longest gap in episodes to date. 2016 proved to be a very busy year for both Jeff & Chris with both of them releasing albums and touring almost non-stop, which made it difficult for them to find time to record new episodes. Ironically the release date of Jeff's album "WORRY." (October 14th, 2016) also marked the longest gap between new episodes to that point (6 months, 27 days/211 days).
There were rumors that several episodes had been recorded during the Summer/Fall of 2016, but they hadn't been released yet for unspecified reasons.
On December 21st, the day before releasing episode 70, Chris tweeted a picture of Jack taken off a TV[18]. The screenshot was quickly identified as taken from the season 5 episode "316" which was first episode they discussed on their return with episode 70.
Total there was a gap of 9 months, 5 days/280 days between the release of episode 69 and episode 70.
# | Date | Episode Title | Hosts | Ratings | Original Songs | Special Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
070 | December 22nd, 2015 | 316 (5x06) |
|
|
-This is the third season premier of the podcast, though it's not referred to as that in the episode.
-This episode was released just over 9 months after the previous episode. The hiatus was unplanned. -This is the episode of LOST where the characters go "back to the island". -*Chris gives his rating as "thirty-..." which Jeff says is not a Number and interprets it as a 42. It's revealed in episode 71 that Chris went back and edited in his rating of 23 after the fact, which explains the reverb effect on his voice when he says "I give it a 23". | |
071 | December 29th, 2016 | Maternity Leave (2x15) |
|
|
-This episode was either released late on 12/28 or very early on12/29 depending what time zone you are in. Shortly after releasing it Chris tweeted that he couldn't remember if the podcast episodes normally released on Wednesdays or Thursdays.[19]
-During the "Lost My Report Card" segment Chris falsely claims that he rates all episodes featuring Sawyer a 42, and any episode without Sawyer cannot earn a 42. Jeff uses this Lostpedia page to disprove him almost immediately. -While discussing his rating of the previous episode Chris reveals his decision to go back and change his episode 70 rating before the episode is released (which he does). -*Chris never actually gives a rating for this episode on the podcast, but later tweeted that it was 42 when asked about it.[20] | |
072 | January 5th, 2017 | The Little Prince (5x04) |
|
|
-This episode was recorded on January 3rd, 2017.
-There is a forgotten theme in this episode around 5:27 where you can hear Chris and Jeff making loud noises to mark the point in the track where they would normally insert the song. It seems like the theme they intended to include was the Main theme again, so this isn't on the list of forgotten themes. -The couples massage Jeff & Chris are discussing was brought up in episode 014 "What They Died For" (6x16). The discussion starts around the 27:15 mark and includes several "on the field" segments. -Jeff says that Chris' rating of 18 is "unprecedented", but Chris also voted episode 020 "Collision" (2x08) an 18. |
Special Episodes
Some episodes are not centered around an episode of LOST for one reason or another.

|
-This is the first special episode released in lieu of a regular episode (though it's not the first time they have missed posting an episode at the regular time).
-This No Show Show aired between episodes 59 & 60, shortly after Jeff's van had been broken into, and all the bands guitars and clothing were stolen while on tour. -The Wing Nuts episode 9 follows directly from this recording. | |
No Show Show #2 | December 3rd, 2015 |
|
-This No Show Show aired between episodes 60 & No Show Show #3.

No Show Show #3 | December 10th, 2015 |
|
-This aired between the No Show Show #2 and episode 61.
-This is the first time the No Show Show has been put up in place of a regular episode twice in a row. -This episode was recorded shortly after Chris' first Stage-It show. |
