Back to the Island is a LOST rewatch podcast started in February of 2014. It is hosted by punk musicians Jeff Rosenstock and Chris Farren, usually along with a rotating third guest host. Each episode of the podcast centers around a single episode of LOST, and episodes are watched in no particular order, which only adds to the general confusion of the hosts and guest hosts.

History

The concept for the show came about in early 2014 while Chris was in New York working with Jeff on the debut release of their band, Antarctigo Vespucci. The origin was explained by Chris and Jeff in response to a listener question in episode 18 “Dave (2x18)." Chris answered,

“The genesis of it was, when we were making the Antarctigo record we started talking about how it would be cool to have a podcast together, and that it should be some sort of like, TV related podcast. Originally we were going to binge watch a show—a whole series… We were thinking Game of Thrones or Scandal… and there was like, a lot of things that we couldn’t figure out, like that Jeff hadn’t seen that I had seen, and vice versa. And we wanted to have something that neither of us had seen and then somehow that turned into something that both of us had seen.”
Jeff continued the thought,
“Then one of us said ‘back to the island,’ and then we were like, ‘That’d be a funny name for a podcast about LOST,’… That’s what I remember happening.”[1]
On episode 69 "The Hunting Party (2x11)" they offered a slightly different and expanded explanation,
"I think we were smoking weed... and we were talking about how it would be fun to do a podcast anyway. And then we just thought that 'Back to the Island' would be a good name for a LOST podcast. And then we were like, 'OK, let's do a LOST podcast.' And then, since we were stoned we decided to watch it all out of order. And then we thought of 'LOST My Report Card' which is segment where we rate the episode... I think we thought the name was a good bit, and watching it out of order was a good bit, and then we thought 'LOST My Report Card' where we rate it on a scale of 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 was a good bit. And so we decided to watch 121 hours of a television show we've already watched, and then talk about it for 121 hours."[2]

Segments

In addition to the main discussion of the episode, Back to the Island features several regular segments, each with their own accompanying theme music or sound effects.

Chris and Jeff Talk About LOST for Four Minutes Straight

This segment was created by Jeff in episode 50. Occasionally, when one of them feels like they've gone too long without discussing the episode of LOST they just watched either Jeff or Chris (usually Jeff) will start this segment in which they can only talk about LOST for at least four minutes.

There is also a version of the theme song that is slightly sped up, due to a misunderstanding the first time Jeff suggested the segment.

Lostapedia

Chris and Jeff look through the Lostpedia.com entry for interesting facts and mistakes from the episode. This segment usually ends with one or both of them annoyed with the lack of interesting trivia. They call it Lostapedia even though the website is Lostpedia.

The theme is from a 1988 Food Emporium commercial with the word “Lostapedia, Lostapedia” layered over the original lyrics “Food Emporium, Food Emporium.” Otherwise the theme is unchanged from the original.[3] There have been several variations/parodies including "Mousapedia" and "Farrenpedia."

In episode 44 Jeff stated his desire to discontinue Lostapedia as a segment, but seemed to forget by the next episode.

Lost My Report Card

Near the end of each episode Jeff, Chris and their guest(s) will rank the episode of LOST they watched on a scale of 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 or 42 with 4 being the lowest score and 42 being the highest. Chris is the most frequent violator of this ranking system, rating “Expose (3x14)” a 23.5, “Collision (2x08)" an 18, ”Something Nice Back Home (4x10)" a 43, "The Little Prince (5x04)" an 18 and "White Rabbit (1x05)" a 10. Jeff has strayed from the numbers less frequently, rating "Orientation (2x03)" a 32 and "White Rabbit (1x05)" a 9.

There are special themes for when all three hosts give the same rating (“3-fr-3’s Day”) or, if there are four hosts, when all four hosts give the same rating (“4-fr-4’s Day”). There has also been a “2-fr-2’s Day” from an episode without a guest host, but Jeff called it horrendous and expressed a desire that it never be played again.[4] So far it's been used two more times, along with several other versions of a 2-fr-2's Day theme. Jeff and Chris have each contributed their own version of a “1-fr-1’s Day” theme for their solo episodes.[5][6]

Chris' Rules

Throughout the show Chris has established his own self-imposed rules on rating certain episodes. These rules are often contradictory, ignored or forgotten, and are ever-changing. Here's a list of the rules he's claimed so far in the order they were established.

  • All episodes from season 1 get an automatic 42. (episode 58)
  • All episodes featuring Sawyer automatically get a 42. (episode 71)
  • All episodes not featuring Sawyer can't get more than a 23. (episode 71)
  • All episodes featuring Sawyer can't get less than an 8. (episode 75)
  • All episodes not featuring Locke get an automatic 42. (episode 81)

Back to the Mailbag

Occasionally they will check the show’s e-mail inbox and read and respond to fan emails. The theme song for Back to the Mailbag is the main podcast theme with additional vocals layered over top to change the words to “Back to the Mailbag at gmail.com.”

Apologies

Some episodes end with the hosts apologizing (or refusing to apologize) for things they said during the episode that they feel were offensive, insensitive or embarrassing. Sometimes the apologies are to the listeners in general, but often they are directed at cast or crew members from LOST. Occasionally one host will apologize to another and there is a special “Apology Accepted” theme song if the apology is accepted.

Bonus Clips

Bonus clips come at the very end of an episode and usually include a short and often out of context audio clip recorded at the same time as the episode, but not included in the main body of the episode. Bonus clips are not included in every episode.

Guest Hosts

Back to the Island has featured many guest hosts, usually musician friends of either Jeff, Chris or both. The following is a list of every guest host, along with the number of episodes they have been credited on, ordered by number of appearances.

Theme Songs

One of the hallmarks of Back to the Island is the abundance of music found throughout the episodes. Jeff and Chris are musicians so they both have the ability to easily create short themes based around topics of conversation during the episode. New themes can be called out at any time and are occasionally done by one host (usually Chris) as a joke on the other host (usually Jeff) knowing that they will now have to write and record that theme for the episode, although Jeff has gotten very skilled at deflecting these themes back at Chris.

Original Songs

The show has included over 150 different original songs and themes to date including live, improvised songs and variations on regularly used themes. The following is a list of all original songs used during the show. (Song titles are assumed, as official titles are rarely given)

"The Incident"

B2TI Live

(L to R) Jeff Rosenstock, Chris Farren and Tim Daniels at the first live Back to the Island event at Union Hall in Brooklyn, NY on April 25th, 2014

"The Incident" was a harrowing and uncertain time for fans and hosts alike. It spanned a total of 6 episodes from episode 27 to episode 32.

Timeline

At the end of episode 26 "Some Like it Hoth (5x13)" Chris teases a very special apology for Tim Daniels. Tim guest hosts the following episode, "The Whole Truth (2x16)," and during the apologies section Chris reveals that when he was in New York a month earlier he saw Tim on the street after exiting the subway but didn't say hi or catch Tim's attention. The episode ends with Jeff and Tim discussing Chris' duplicitous nature and calling for him to reflect on his behavior. Tim decides not to accept Chris' apology immediately and asks instead for some time to think about it.

Episode 28 "Solitary (1x09)," opens with the series' only "Previously on..." segment recounting Chris' apology from the week before. Chris then leaves Jeff a voice mail saying it's time to record the podcast and that he hasn't been able to reach him or Tim since recording the last episode. Chris proceeds to record episode 28 on his own, featuring more somber sounding acoustic versions of the theme songs. This is also the shortest episode of the series.

Episode 29 "Because You Left (5x01)" has Chris hosting with Casey Lee. For the majority of the episode Chris repeatedly redirects the conversation to Jeff and even writes him a birthday song. Chris rates this episode a 4 because, "LOST sucks," and he's, "sick of doing this podcast."[7]

Episode 30 "Happily Ever After (6x11)" begins with a phone conversation between Chris and Jeff where Jeff explains that he didn't have his phone because he was in Japan and Korea and that he's worried about Chris after listening to the last two episodes. Chris replies that he thought Japan and Korea were boroughs of New York. Jeff then further explains that Tim was also out of the country. The rest of the episode follows normally with a much more happy and energetic Chris.

Episode 31 "? (2x21)" has Jeff hosting alone while Chris is out of town. This episode is almost the complete opposite of Chris' solo episode with Jeff speaking very fast and energetically, as a stream of consciousness, for almost the entire episode.

Episode 32 "Whatever Happened, Happened (5x11)" wraps up "the Incident" story-line with Jeff and Chris hosting together with Tim Daniels as the special guest again. During the episode Tim is noticeably still upset, making almost constant, subtle, passive-aggressive digs at Chris. Chris doesn't seem to notice and recounts how he made it up to Tim by flying to New York and taking Tim to dinner at the Times Square Red Lobster, boasting that he picked up the $65 check and only made Tim pay the tip even though he only had a salad.

"The Incident" ends with everything going back to normal.

Shannonpalooza

Shannonpalooza is a series of episodes starting with the second episode of season 2 (episode 44) and ending with the fifth episode of season 2 (episode 47). According to the hosts, Shannonpalooza is a summer concert series centered around Shannon/Maggie Grace. Shannonpalooza was teased in episode 43 of the podcast with a commercial. The Shannonpalooza episodes feature a different opening theme ("Time to Pretend" by MGMT(except for episode 46)) and "Shannon Trivia" segments hosted by Chris (except for episode 47).

It's possible that the idea of Shannonpalooza came from an early episode of the podcast when they were complaining about Shannon and Jeff suggested that they should watch all of Shannon's episodes back to back and get them out of the way.

It's also possible that they just thought it would be funny.

LOCKEtoberfest

LOCKEtoberfest is a block of episodes centering around Locke during October 2015, beginning with episode 54 and ending with episode 57. Traditionally Jeff and Chris have showed open disdain of the character of John Locke, but during the beginning of season 2 and "Shannonpalooza" their attitudes shifted somewhat, even so far as to cause Chris to exclaim "Locke rocks!" During episode 46 Chris announced LOCKEtoberfest without consulting Jeff, and seemingly just because he liked the pun on Oktoberfest/Rocktoberfest.

So far the only unique segment has been "Shannon Trivia: Locke Addiction" which, like Shannon Trivia from Shannonpalooza, is announced by a harmonica tone. Shannon Trivia: Locke Addiction questions center around Terry O'Quinn.

Jeff also stated that there's "music everywhere" at LOCKEtoberfest and "you can't escape it," but the music only consisted of a harmonica jam between Jeff and Chris during episode 54.

Season 2

In episode 42 "The Other Woman CHRISTMAS SPECIAL (4x06)" Jeff and Chris stated that they were taking a break, but they would probably be back in February.[8] Later in the episodeJeff jokingly said "We did 42 of these, and in four to two weeks we're gonna come back and do 42 more."[9] During his AMA, Jeff answered that the plan was for the show to return in May 2015.[10] The reason for the delay was that he "wanted to come back with some episodes that were me Chris and Tim live in the same room instead of over Google Hangouts."[11] This intention was repeated on Twitter[12].

On June 19th, Chris stated via Twitter that they recorded two new episodes, but "things have been hectic with mixing [the new Antarctigo Vespucci record] and [Jeff's] wedding so we haven't been able to edit or do more yet"[13].

On July 22, 2015 the official Back to the Island twitter account tweeted a link to a stream of the new Antarctigo Vespucci album "Leavin' La Vida Loca" with the comment "Pt. 1 of cool news today:..."[14] followed by a winky face[15] teasing the release of the Season 2 premier later that night.

-This is the first episode of season 2 to not feature a Lostapedia segment, despite Jeff expressing a wish to end the segment after episode 44.

-This, combined with the previous episode, makes the first true back-to-back 3-fr-3's Day. Previously, episodes 13 & 14 were 3-fr-3's Days, but they forgot to play the theme in episode 14. And episodes 24 & 25 were 3-fr-3's Days, but episode 25 had a total of 5 hosts and only 3 of them had matching scores (all the scores weren't unanimous) but they played the theme anyway.

-This episode combined with the previous episode has the widest possible range of scores (all 42's last episode, all 4's this episode).

-This might be considered to be the lowest ranking episode, even though episode 44 also earned three 4's, because initially in episode 44 Chris said he wanted to give it an 8, but then changed his mind. Episode 42 also earned all 4's, but because there was no guest host, it only earned two 4's, not three.

-This episode came after a one week break, during which Jeff promised a super-sized episode[17]. This episode comes in at around 38 minutes, which is about average.

-The reason for the confusion on the episode counts is because there were 3 longer-than-usual episodes of LOST, and Netflix splits two of them into two episodes. So the actual produced episode count is 118, but Netflix has 120 listed.

-The version of the LOST series finale on Netflix used to be a shorter, edited version and it's possible it used to appear as two episodes as well, accounting for Google listing 121 episodes.

Season 3

The break between season 2 and 3 was unplanned and is the longest gap in episodes to date. 2016 proved to be a very busy year for both Jeff & Chris with both of them releasing albums and touring almost non-stop, which made it difficult for them to find time to record new episodes. Ironically the release date of Jeff's album "WORRY." (October 14th, 2016) also marked the longest gap between new episodes to that point (6 months, 27 days/211 days).

There were three episodes recorded during the Summer of 2016, but they weren't released until the next year. These episodes were eventually released sporadically during season 3 (episodes 80, 81 and 84), acting as a backlog to fill in weeks when no new episodes were ready to post. Ironically, when these three episodes were eventually released they were released out of order with what was intended to be the season 3 premiere episode coming out last as episode 84, the 15th episode of season 3.

On December 21st, the day before releasing episode 70, Chris tweeted a picture of Jack taken off a TV[18]. The screenshot was quickly identified as taken from the season 5 episode "316" which was first episode they discussed on their return with episode 70.

Total there was a gap of 9 months, 5 days/280 days between the release of episode 69 and episode 70.

-*This was actually a "Bamboopedia" segment, but the theme only plays for 1 second so it sounds identical to the Lostapedia theme and it's unlikely that they created a new Bamboopedia theme.

-This episode was supposed to be released before the Brexit episode (episode 81), but due to some confusion with the files it was released after. Hence Jeff referencing the Brexit episode and Chris stating that it hadn't aired yet.

-Chris claims he's never seen "Idiocracy" in this episode, but in a previous episode they had a discussion about how he didn't like it.

-Jeff refers to this as a Night Boys episode because they were so tired, but the episode title and theme songs are for a normal episode.

-This is season 3 episode 11 of LOST and Chris and Jeff both watched this episode on March 11th, or 311 Day.

-The music video that Chris is watching is the lyric video for 311's song "Too Much To Think".

-Chris is right that they bring up the Lostpedia background twice in this season, but he forgot that they brought it up once before on the show as well.

-This is the first episode recorded for season 3 and the last episode of their "backlog" of episodes recorded in the summer of 2016.

-This episode was recorded on Memorial Day (May 30th) 2016

-Jeff and Chris discuss how many episodes season 3 will have compared to seasons 1 and 2. Assuming no more seasons, the break down is:

Season 1 - 42

Season 2 - 27 (Seasons 1 & 2 combined - 69)

Season 3 - 52

-Jeff claims Dominic Monaghan and Evangeline Lilly were married. This is fals, they never married, but they dated for several years.

-Jeff is correct that Pilot Pt. 1 and Pilot Pt. 2 originally aired a week apart, but were reaired togetether at a later date.

-The episode of LOST discussed here followed the episode of LOST discussed in the previous episode of the podcast. This was unintentional as the previous podcast episode was recorded almost a year earlier with 14 episodes recorded between the two.

-This episode was released a day late because Jeff admitted during the episode that he forgot to bring his computer with him to the shows he played earlier in the week, so they couldn't record until he was back home.

-The end of this episode was cut off when Chris accidentally stopped recording while looking something up online. Jeff provides a synopsis at the end of the episode of what wasn't recorded, including their ratings and several themes that were played.

-In the episode Jeff makes a reference that April 8th is the day of his "certain death". In a previous episode Jeff claimed his birthday was April 8th, 1915 at 4:23:42pm, which in American date notation and 24 hour time can be written as 4/8/15 at 16:23:42 pm.

-This is the first time ratings have been given at the beginning of the episode instead of the end.

-They make a comment about how long it's been since they recorded an episode in person together. Episode 70 "One of Them" was the last one they recorded together, so they've released 7 episodes in between, but only record 4 because 3 of the episodes released were the ones recorded the previous summer.

-Chris reveals that the "single player video game" he was referring to in the song "Still Beating" is Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare.

-This episode was likely recorded on April 17th, 2017 based on the fact that Chris tweeted a picture of this episode on Jeff's TV with the caption "I wish Sawyer was my dad" which is one of his notes from this episode.[21]-This is the first episode in the *AFTER DARK*: Food Island series. It's unclear if in the future all "Food Island" episodes will also be *AFTER DARK* episodes or not.

-Jeff is right, they have discussed the Smoke Monster sound before.

-The correct answers the the LOST trivia questions are: Michael's last name is Dawson. Jack Bender directed the series finale. Michael Giacchino composed the score for LOST.

-This episode was recorded sometime between April 17th, 2017 and April 20th, 2017, while Chris was in New York working on a new Antarctigo Vespucci record with Jeff.

-This is the first and only episode to feature a sponsor. The sponsor was Back to Back to the Island and their ad was a joke about Chris' birthday which was two days after this episode aired.

-This is the first episode to feature a guest host in season 3 and this marks the end of the longest streak without a guest host: 19 episodes.

-This episode has the longest Cold Open. The theme music doesn't start until 9 minutes in.

-At the end of this episode Jeff says that the next episode the next episode they'll be watching is "Recon, season 6 episode 11". "Recon" is actually season 6 episode 8. Episode 11 is "Happily Ever After" which they watched in season 2 for episode 030.

-This episode was recorded on April 17th, 2017. It can be dated by the article Jeff reads from the AP news wire[22].

-The story Chris tells about a man hiding stolen diamonds in a building & returning later to find the building is a police station is a basic summary of the 1999 Martin Lawrence comedy Blue Streak.

-At the end of the episode Chris says the next episode is "brought to you by Stumps.com". Stumps.com is not a real website and is likely a play on Stamps.com which advertises on many podcasts.

-This is an *AFTER DARK* episode.-This episode was recorded sometime between April 17th and April 20th 2017.

-This the first episode to feature the Apology Accepted theme at the beginning of the show rather than the end.

-The Sun & Jin episode Jeff & Chris can't quite remember is "Ji-Yeon" which they watched for episode 10. Sun's portion is a flash forward, while Jin's is a flash back, but they're edited in such a way that it looks to be happening in the same time to trick viewers into thinking Jin got off the island with Sun.

-Chris' "LA Voice" that one tweet mentions is referring to Chris' monologue about his car from episode 86.

-*Chris originally gave this episode a 42, then retracts his rating based on a rule stating any episode without Sawyer can't get more than a 23. As punishment he changes his rating to 4. Conversely, according to his already established rules this episode should have also earned an automatic 42 from Chris due to the fact that Locke did not appear in it.

-At the end of the episode they state that the next episode will be "The Other 48 Hours". This is a mistake, the episode title is actually "The Other 48 Days".

-This episode is incorrectly titled as "The Other 48 Hours" on Soundcloud and iTunes.

-This episode was recorded sometime between April 18th and April 20th, 2017.

-There is not an episode of LOST that starts on a closeup of Vincent's eye, but they have discussed it before.

-Jeff's record "Others! Others!" is available for free on his donation based record label site.

-Chris reads a statement at the end of the episode to explain why he's breaking his rule of never giving episodes without Sawyer a 42. Sawyer does appear briefly in this episode which negates his statement.

-Other false claims in his statement include the claim that Back to the Island started in 2013 (the first episode was posted in late February of 2014) and that his Sawyer-centric rule system has been in place since the beginning (the first mention of this rule is in episode 71).

-This is the last episode recorded while Chris was visiting Jeff in New York to work on a new Antarctigo Vespucci record in April of 2017.

-Despite the new theme song, Jonah Bayer has only appeared on the show 4 times. Casey Lee has appeared 5 times and Tim Daniels has appeared 21 times, but neither have gotten theme songs.

-The terrible show Jeff played at South Street Bar & Grill was discussed by Chris and Casey in episode 29 "Because You Left (5x01)", which coincidentally is the episode of LOST immediately preceding this episode.

-This is the third episode where Chris discusses the imprinting process from the Twilight books/films. The first is episode 8 "LaFleur (5x08)". The Second is episode 61 "The Variable (5x14)"

-Jeff referred to this as "Back to the Island: Under the Weather Edition" because he was sick while recording, but he asked for no new themes so they used the regular theme.

-This is only the 3rd time they've not used any additional songs beside the opening and closing themes, however this is one episode (episode 040) in which the only theme played was the Lostapedia theme.

-Chris asks about the pattern of LOST opening on a character's eye. They did it 12 times in season 1, and only once in season 2 and twice before this episode in season 3. It was not a theme they relied on heavily past the first season.[23]-Jeff and Chris watch several fake commercial tie-ins including this one for the Hanso Foundation and this one for Oceanic Airlines.

-To answer their question in the episode, we are never shown Aaron as an adult.

-The ad in this episode was intended for episode 096.

-Chris calls out Jeff to make the Apolotigy Accepted theme, saying "It's been a long time since we've heard a theme from you." The last theme song that was obviously Jeff's was in episode 087 - "What's Your Favorite Snack: Savory Edition".

-Chris initially rated this episode a 4 before remembering his rule about episodes featuring Sawyer not getting less than 8 and quickly changing it to a 5, then 6, then 8 in a panic.

-Despite their promise at the beginning of the season Jeff announced the show would be taking a break while he and Chris tour to preserve the quality of the final episodes.

No Show Show

Chris posted a series of episodes during season 2, called "No Show Show", in place of traditional episodes of Back to the Island when there were no new episodes to post. These mostly consist of Chris talking to his friends without any real direction or purpose. There is a debate over the meaning of the title. In the first episode Chris says it's called No Show Show because there was no Back to the Island show to post. Casey suggests it's called No Show Show because Jeff was a no-show.
