An ancient village was constructed on the Island by the survivors of Claudia's shipwreck. The village consisted of at least five roundhouses with solid stone bases and wooden upper constructions with thatched roofs. About twenty people lived there, including a high proportion of women and some children. They seemed to have salvaged goods from the shipwreck, or else have mastered the art of pottery making.
After learning from the ghost of his real mother, Claudia, that she was murdered by Mother, the Man in Black ran away at age 13 and joined the village, where he lived for 30 years. After Mother foiled his plan to leave the island, she burned the village to the ground.
