Theories

An ancient village was constructed on the Island by the survivors of Claudia's shipwreck. The village consisted of at least five roundhouses with solid stone bases and wooden upper constructions with thatched roofs. About twenty people lived there, including a high proportion of women and some children. They seemed to have salvaged goods from the shipwreck, or else have mastered the art of pottery making.

After learning from the ghost of his real mother Claudia that she was murdered by Mother, the Man in Black ran away at age 13 and lived with at the village for 30 years. His foster mother's low opinion of people was confirmed to him by his living among them. After Mother foiled her son's plan to leave the island, she burned the village to the ground.
